The film will have its world premiere in the international competition section at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival.[5][6]

Plot

In a futuristic utopian society, human emotions have been eradicated and everyone lives in peace but when a new disease surfaces, everything changes for illustrator Silas (Hoult). He becomes an outcast once infected and is drawn to his writer co-worker Nia (Stewart), who is also infected but hiding her condition. In order to survive, they have to escape together.

Principal photography began on August 4, 2014 in Japan and will continue until August 28, after which production will move to Singapore for another three weeks.[12] Filming wrapped in Singapore on September 26, 2014.[citation needed]

Promotion and Marketing

"Equals" was sold by Mister Smith Entertainment to over 35 territories for distribution at Marché du Film during the Cannes Film Festival.[13]
Doremus, Stewart, Hoult, and producer Michael Pruss attended a press conference in Tokyo on August 2, 2014 to announce the start of the film.[14]
The first still from the film was released on September 26, 2014.[15]

Release

On July 29, 2015, it was announced that "Equals" was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival and have its world premiere.[16]
