The Martian is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott. The screenplay by Drew Goddard is based on the 2011 novel The Martian by Andy Weir. The film stars Matt Damon, with Jessica Chastain, Michael Peña, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Kate Mara, and Donald Glover in supporting roles. It will mark Scott's fourth science-fiction film after Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Prometheus (2012).
The film is scheduled to be released on October 2, 2015 in 3D and 2D.

Premise

During a human mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after being caught in a fierce storm, and is left behind when the rest of the crew evacuate the planet and begin to head back to Earth. Watney finds himself stranded and alone, with only meager supplies and his ingenuity, wit, and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal home, despite knowing that even if his survival is made known there is no realistic prospect for a rescue.

Production

In March 2013, 20th Century Fox optioned the film rights, and hired screenwriter Drew Goddard to adapt and direct the film.^[1] In May 2014, it was reported that Ridley Scott was in negotiations to direct an adaptation that would star Matt Damon as Mark Watney.^[2] On September 3, Jessica Chastain joined the film as the female lead.^[3] On September 16, Mackenzie Davis joined the film's cast for a small crucial role.^[4] On September 17, Kate Mara joined the cast.^[5] On September 24, it was announced that Michael Peña was in early talks to join the film, but that his involvement would depend on his schedule.^[6] On October 2, Jeff Daniels joined the film to play the director of NASA.^[7] On October 10, Donald Glover and Aksel Hennie joined the film, both would play young NASA employees.^[8] On October 20, Sean Bean joined the film to play a NASA flight director.^[9] On October 23, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sebastian Stan joined the film's cast, Ejiofor would play Venkat Kapoor, the Director of the Mars Mission.^[10][11]

Filming

Filming began on November 10, 2014, in Budapest.^[12][13]
Beginning in March, filming is set to commence in southern Jordan, at Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, an iconic landscape used in films as far back as Lawrence of Arabia. The location has previously been used for Martian landscapes for scenes set on the planet, such as in the films Red Planet and The Last Days on Mars.^[14]

Publicity

On December 5, 2014, the Orion spacecraft took the cover page of The Martian script on the first test flight of the unmanned Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1). The script was launched atop a Delta IV on the flight lasting 4 hours and 24 minutes, landing at its target in the Pacific Ocean.^[15]

Release

The film is scheduled for release on October 2, 2015.^[16] It was originally scheduled for release on November 25, 2015.^[17] On June 10, 2015, it was announced that Fox would move the film up to an October 2, 2015 release, trading places with Victor Frankenstein.^[18]
